Pension Valuation in Divorce

Background

During a divorce, a pension plan benefit is considered a marital asset, and a value of the benefit needs to be determined as the assets are divided between parties. Several factors affect how the value of the pension benefit is determined, including state laws, the length of marriage, pension plan features, and actuarial assumptions. It is complicated to value a pension plan benefit, and a qualified pension professional must perform these calculations!

Our Services

As experienced pension actuaries, we provide a calculation of the present value of the pension plan benefit currently in payment or payable at a future retirement date. We work with the attorney representing one of the parties to the divorce to obtain the necessary pension plan information, perform the calculations, and summarize the results in a report. We are generally able to complete the calculations within two weeks of receipt of the required data, but delivery of results can be expedited if necessary. We also provide expert witness testimony if needed.
